After some fun in the sun at Lake Merritt with the Oaklandish boating crowd, we headed over to Fruitvale to check out a new ice cream place that has been all the rage this past week on Chowhound. People have been waxing ecstatic about the hand churned ice-cream in authentic, artisanal flavors, and the low, low prices.
Nieveria Cinco de Mayo, in Fruitvale's new Public Market development, did not disappoint. Gorgeous elote ice cream had great corny flavor and nubbins of sweet corn adding a delicious counterpoint to the creamy goodness. Yerbabuena tasted of freshly infused spearmint (a truly original flavor profile), rather than mint essence. M. said that his chocolate ice cream was in the light, Mexican atole style, and delicious.
The scoops were generous, the prices cheap, the proprietor friendly, and the presence of the abuela, who said that these were all her family recipes, made this place a new favorite for me.
